Hot Yoga is popular! Why?

1. Flexibility: No, you won’t be forced into contortionist positions. The heat will allow you to safely reach new levels of personal flexibility in beginner’s postures, which is therapeutic for your body (see number seven).

2. Strength:  This yoga is low impact and uses muscles you didn’t know you had—

3. Breath:  With the added element of the heat, you won’t make it far if you don’t breathe deeply! If there is no breathing, there is no yoga. It won’t take long before you learn to breathe in a full and controlled manner.

4. Cardio: Your heart can work the same way doing yoga postures in a heated room as it does when running a mile, and you never even leave your mat. Particularly in postures when you are balancing and contracting your muscles at the same time. A 90-minute class can burn up to 1,000 calories.

5. Detox: The heated room helps you to stretch more and get your cardio, but it also helps you sweat. The postures themselves are detoxifying for your muscles, organs, and glands and sweating furthers that.

6. Focus:  Hot Yoga classes consist of the same postures and two breathing exercises— there is almost always a dialed routine. The routine helps you to advance your practice through repetition. As you advance, you gain tremendous focus and determination. The ability to focus carries over to your daily life. When you can focus on the task at hand, you’ll excel and you can enjoy it more.

7. Healing: The primary purpose of this yoga is therapy. With a regular practice, these postures can help to heal old injuries and also prevent them in the future. This is especially true for, but not limited to, back pain. Don’t skip the postures that are slightly uncomfortable. Hot yoga is known to reduce the symptoms of conditions and illnesses including diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, depression, arthritis and obesity.

Boron, a semi metal, (meaning it has similarities with metals and non-metals) that is #5 on the periodic table, is not a well known star mineral, but still plays a crucial supporting role in maintaining optimal health.

You have gotten tiny amounts of boron your whole life in many foods like almonds, apples, avocados, bananas, beans and more.

Boron is found commonly in soil and water, and is essential for animals and humans.

But due to mass production farming techniques, boron (and other minerals) have been drastically depleted from the foods we eat.

Combine this drop with how we so often reach for minerally vacant fast-food and processed foods, and it’s understandable that what you get these days from your diet is just not enough – leading to potentially dangerous deficiencies.
Boron Supports Metabolic Processes

Boron has the potential to influence a number of metabolic processes (hormones, blood plasma, vitamin D, bone maintenance, inflammation and cognition/learning) (1) and interestingly, it’s effect is even more noticeable when other nutrients like cholecalciferol (vitamin D) and magnesium are present.

Just as a tire without an axle is useless, the latest science indicates that essential trace minerals need each other to perform their duties.

Rats and chicks given boron have been shown to have increases in bone strength. There is also a correlation with boron in regards to improving arthritis, plasma lipid profiles, and brain function (1).

Add to that boron is thought to have a preventative effect for women and lung cancer.
Cancer?

A ten year study in Houston Texas looked at 763 women with lung cancer. The conclusion stated “boron intake was inversely associated with lung cancer in women, whereas women who consumed low boron and did not use HRT were at substantial increased odds.” (2)

True, “inversely associated” does not prove a connection, but “if it looks and quacks like a duck – it’s likely a duck” then boron should be taken very seriously for its potential benefits.

And because boron helps reduce inflammation and affects steroid hormone levels, it is believed it helps prevent certain types of cancer.

Data from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) states “increased dietary boron intake was associated with a decreased risk of prostate cancer”(3)
Boron and Testosterone

And boron does even more: there’s a positive connection with testosterone, which is something that should perk up the ears of every man reading this.

A study done in 2010 at the University of Medical Sciences in Iran found that boron increases male testosterone in as little as 7 days (4)

Testosterone is proven to increase muscle mass, sharpen memory and concentration, libido, and improve energy levels, so boosting it naturally and safely with the aid of boron should be considered a “no brainer.”
Boron and Kidney Stones

Furthermore, according to The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine “boron seems to have an impact on (kidney) stone removal.”

Urinary calcium excretion is one of the determinants of kidney stones, and tireless boron (in doses of 3mg per day) somehow reduces this, leading to less excruciating stones. (5)

It is not known exactly how boron assists all the functions and services it does for your body. What we do know about are the many repercussions if you don’t get enough of it.

I Put My Pen Down…

 

I read this today and wanted to share with my friends at this time or any time this it important and valuable moment reminder:

I stop my thinking and planning.  I cease from my worrying about my future, or my tiny little world.  I stop fretting over my pathetic little reputation, my narrow little kingdom.  I stop for awhile the constant chatter-the e-mail, the text, the messages the TV, the Facebook post, the press of projects, of urgent demands and deadlines, and past due notices.

I chase away the jumble ed mess of scattered thinking of fear, of doubt or worry, and poor motivation.  I renounce the desire to “get even” – retribution should hold no power over me.  By Michael Owens

Stress can make you fat

Most people are aware that stress can have very negative effects on our body, from headaches and nausea to trouble sleeping and depression, but many don’t realize that the everyday pressures of life can also make you fat!  In fact, stress is directly linked to the release of hormones that trigger food cravings and mask our body’s ability to know when it’s full.

One major culprit is cortisol, a hormone that gives us energy to handle stressful situations but also induces powerful cravings to ensure our energy stores are quickly replenished.  The problem is that we end up craving simple sugars and carbohydrates, which offer quick energy but don’t help us a bit when it comes to belly fat.  The result is a bulging waistline, often regardless of how much we exercise.

So how can we combat stress and win the battle of the bulge?  Relaxation is key.  Activities like meditation, YOGA, listening to music, and reading can all help us unwind, while hobbies can distract our minds from the stresses of life.  Eating well, exercising and taking a daily anti-stress supplements can also help. Women fought for us to have this right GoVote!


This is the story of our Mothers and Grandmothers who lived only 90 years ago.

Remember, it was not until 1920that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless
for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.

And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden’s blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of ‘obstructing sidewalk traffic.’

They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left
her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.

They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against
an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought
Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe
the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching,
twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the ‘Night of Terror’ on Nov. 15, 1917, when the

warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered hisguards to teach
a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket
Woodrow Wilson’s White House for the right to vote.For weeks, the women’s
only water came from an open pail. Their food–all of it colorless slop–was
infested with worms.

When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger
strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat
and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured
like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO’s movie

‘Iron Jawed Angels.’ It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women
waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my
say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But theactual
act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting
often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient.

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women’s history, saw the

HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked
angry. She was–with herself. ‘One thought kept coming back to me as I watched
that movie,’ she said. ‘What would those women think of the way I use,
or don’t use,my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just
younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.’ The right to vote,
she said, had become valuable to her ‘all over again.’

HBO released the movie on video and DVD . I wish all history, social studies

and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum I want it
shown on Bunco/Bingo night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize
this isn’t our usual idea of socializing,but we are not voting in the numbers
that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade

a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently
institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul
was strong, he said, and brave. That didn’t make her crazy.

The doctor admonished the men: ‘Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.’

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know.

We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard
for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic,
republican or independent party – remember to vote.

Nut Milk

Almonds are a good source of vitamin E and are about 20 percent protein, so they are also very filling.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cup almonds, soaked for 4 hours or more pour off the soak water and rinse well
  • 8 cups purified water

You may add flavors below you just go go with the nuts and water.

  • you may 2-3 Medjool date
  • A few drops of natural vanilla  extract
  • 2 tbs. cacao powder for chocolate flavor

Directions:

  1. Place almonds and water in a blender and blend on high speed.
  2. Strain mixture through a nut milk bag or a couple of layers of cheese cloth into a bowl.
  3. Rinse blender and add back in the strained liquid.
  4. Add date or flavors and blend.
  5. Refrigerate and enjoy.

 

Nutrition by the Numbers

Remember, health is the greatest commodity you can ever have, so every step you succeed at, whether it feels large or small, is a great leap forward in this most important journey towards being all you were intended to be. If you get discouraged at any point, keep this in mind: This is your one and only body and mind, and, more than anything else, you glorify God in your body, the Holy Spirit resides in you.

As you are adopting a healthy eating plan remember some changes present more challenge than others, just keep working at them.

The best way to determine where you stand with your health is through simple numbers easy to obtain with  simple test.

  • Knowing your insulin numbers,
  • weight, blood pressure, and
  • cholesterol levels. What those numbers mean to you is valuable.Ideally you would like to know these numbers before you start to change your habits so you can compare where you were and how far you have come towards health..

First listen to your body.If anyone recommends a supplement that makes you nauseous or sick feeling in any way; listens to your body and don’t take it.

Know You Insulin levels:

Most adults have about one gallon of blood in their bodies and are quite surprised to learn that in that gallon, there is only one teaspoon of sugar! You only need one teaspoon of sugar at all times — if that. If your blood sugar level were to rise to one tablespoon of sugar you would quickly go into a hyperglycemic coma and die.

You body works very hard to prevent this by producing insulin to keep your blood sugar at the appropriate level. Any meal or snack high in grain and sugar carbohydrates typically generates a rapid rise in blood glucose. To compensate for this your pancreas secretes insulin into your bloodstream, which lowers your blood sugar to keep you from dying.

However, if you consume a diet consistently high in sugar and grains, over time your body becomes “sensitized” to insulin and requires more and more of it to get the job done. Eventually, you become insulin resistant, and then diabetic.

If you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or are overweight, it is highly likely that you are eating too many grains — yes, even unrefined whole grains — as this is the most common culprit causing your insulin level to become abnormal.

Compounding the problem, when your insulin levels rise due to an excess of carbohydrates, they send your body a hormonal message telling it to store fat while holding on to the fat that is already there. So not only will excess carbohydrates make you overweight, they will effectively hamper your weight loss efforts too. Excess carbohydrates are usually in the form of breads, potatoes, rice, donuts, bagels, soft drinks, candy etc.

Your Fasting Blood Insulin Test

To find out your insulin levels, you need to get tested by your doctor. The test you need to ask for is a fasting blood insulin test; the test is done by just about every commercial laboratory and is relatively inexpensive.

Facts about Your Fasting Insulin Test:

  • This test is profoundly useful. It’s one of the least expensive tests in traditional medicine, yet it is one of the most powerful. A normal fasting blood insulin level is below 5, but ideally you’ll want to be below 3.
  • Many intergraded medical doctors recommend you can safely ignore the reference ranges from the lab as they are based on “normals” of a population that has highly-disturbed insulin levels.
  • This is a great test to do BEFORE you start dietary changes as you can use it to assess how well you are progressing in the program.
  • If your level is above 5 you will want to consider significantly reducing most sugars and grains, even whole wheat grains, until you lower your level.  Once you’ve normalized your insulin level you can reintroduce grains into your diet at a lower level to optimize your health.
  • Exercise is of enormous benefit in improving the sensitivity of your insulin receptors, and helps normalize your insulin level far more quickly.

 Know Your Ideal Weight

  • Unfortunately, two out of three people in the U.S. are overweight and one out of three is obese, and the rest of the world is not far behind. It has been my experience that many people are in denial about being overweight.
  • One effective and simple method to figure out if you have a weight problem is as follows: With a tape measure, comfortably measure the distance around the smallest area below the rib cage and above the umbilicus (belly button). Waist circumference, perhaps surprisingly, is the best and simplest anthropometric measure of total body fat.
  • It is better than BMI (body mass index), and is also the best indicator of intra-abdominal fat mass. So if you measure your waist, men would be classified as obese if their waist size is above 40 inches, and women if it’s above 37.
  • BMI is a good tool, however, to find out what your ideal weight should be. The National Institutes of Health has a simple online BMI calculatorathttp://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ that can help you painlessly calculate your ideal weight.
  • Your ideal weight is important for a good nutrition plan. Not only because a good health coach is committed to helping your body heal and become healthier, but also because extra body weight and obesity can have major negative psychological effects that impair your ability to be optimally healthy.
  • If you are not at your ideal weight — overweight or underweight — you should start with the Beginning nutrition plan.

BMI Categories:

  • Underweight = <18.5
  • Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
  • Overweight = 25-29.9
  • Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

Know Your Ideal Blood Pressure — 120/80

  • Ideally your blood pressure should be about 120/80 without medication. If you are on medication, you will be delighted to know that a goodnutrition plan tends to normalize elevated blood pressures in the vast majority of people.
  • Although elevated insulin levels are one of the most potent contributors to elevated blood pressure, it’s also common for stress, tension or anxiety to contribute to this problem. After you begin a good nutrition plan and follow it for several months, if you don’t see an improvement in your blood pressure you need to speak to someone who can help you get emotional  relief . Seek out a health care professional of life coach who is well-versed in using stress-relief methods.
  • Dr. Mercola a natural health physician says “In my clinical experience, over 95 percent of patients with elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels respond to a reduced carbohydrate and insulin level correction approach. This is especially true for triglycerides. In over 20 years of practicing medicine, I have never seen an elevated triglyceride level fail to drop in response to a low carbohydrate program.”We are not talking about a high protein Approach to diet either, but a high vegetable, fruit, lean proteins, nuts, fish in a balanced approach.

Know Your Cholesterol Level

Most people are seriously confused about their cholesterol levels. This is because too much emphasis is placed on the importance of the total cholesterol. A far more important predictor of cardiovascular risk is actually the ratio of good cholesterol (HDL) to total cholesterol.

Dr. Mercola and other whole health providers use the percentage of HDL and obtain this number by simply dividing the HDL by the total cholesterol (HDL/Total Cholesterol). Ideally this number should be above 24%. Levels below 10 percent are very dangerous and usually indicate an imminent cardiovascular problem. Ideally, your level should be 30 or higher. It rarely gets above 50, but to the best of my knowledge, the higher the number the better.

It is important to note that some clinicians actually obtain this ratio by dividing the total cholesterol by the HDL (Total Cholesterol/HDL). In this case, the numbers should be lower. The cut-off point for a poor ratio would be any number greater than 4, with greater than 10 having serious problems. This number rarely drops below 2.

There is a small subset of individuals born with a genetic condition called familiar hypercholesterolemia, (about one in 500 people) in which their cholesterols are typically around 350 or higher. While a good approach to eating will help to moderate their cholesterol levels, they usually do not normalize with a low insulin program such as this.

You must use caution and consult a trained natural health care clinician if your cholesterol is above 350.

You can also use the triglyceride to HDL ratio (Triglyceride/HDL) as another indicator of insulin disturbance. This ratio should be below 2. The higher this number is, the worse your insulin control may be.

These basic numbers can be monitored to show you progress from a medical numbers standpoint.It is beneficial to have a record to look back on in the event you need medical assistance for any reason.

Now you should be keeping a food journal, evaluating your diet for health factor and risk factor, and getting a few simple tests to determine where you are with your personal health.

Health coach and fat in the diet

Fats are essential for good health. They aid in energy production, cell building, oxygen transport, blood clotting, and the production of extremely active hormone-like substances called prostaglandins.

Fats can be saturated, polyunsaturated, or monounsaturated. Our bodies can produce both monounsaturated and saturated fats. Polyunsaturated fats, or essential fatty acids, cannot be produced in the body and must come from the diet.

Coconut oil is the best oil available:

Nearly 50% of the fatty acid in natural coconut oil is lauric acid, which converts to the fatty acid monolaurin in the body. Monolaurin has adverse effects on a variety of microorganisms including bacteria, yeast, fungi, and enveloped viruses. It [monolaurin] destroys the lipid membrane of such enveloped viruses as HIV, measles, Herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), influenza and cytomegalovirus (CMV). The usefulness lauric acid/monolaurin in treating AIDS is currently under investigation. Lauric acid is a main component of human breast milk and helps protect children from illness during infancy.

Capric acid, which comprises another 7% of coconut oil fat content, also stimulates anti-microbial activity.

In other words: not only does coconut oil not cause heart problems, it is good for you. To quote Dr. Mary Enig: “The research over four decades concerning coconut oil in the diet and heart disease is quite clear: coconut oil has been shown to be beneficial.

Coconut oil is a “functional food,” defined as a food that “provides a health benefit over and beyond the basic nutrients. It is an immune-system enhancer.

Key Functions of good fats:

  • Fat is mostly stored in the body’s adipose (fat) cells but is also found in blood plasma and other body cells.
  • Fat insulates your body, cushions vital organs, and can be converted into energy.
  • Fat is used to build new cells and is critical for normal brain development and nerve function.
  • Fat is also needed to carry and help absorb fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, and carotenoids.

Food Sources:

Fat is twice as calorie-dense (1 gram = 9 calories) as carbohydrates or protein (1 gram = 4 calories). Although there are health benefits associated with olive oils, they are still high in calories (1 tbsp = 120 calories). In addition, many processed foods and fast foods are high in fat, especially saturated fat.

  • Mono-unsaturated fats are found in olive and coconut oils.
  • Saturated fats are found in animal products such as butter, cheese, whole milk, ice cream, cream, and fatty meats, as well as some vegetable oils – coconut, palm, and palm kernel oils.
  • Polyunsaturated fats are found in safflower, sunflower, corn, and soybean oils.

The first, extra-virgin olive oil is the best monounsaturated fat and works great as a salad dressing. However,olive oil should not be used for cooking. Due to its chemical structure, heat makes olive oil susceptible to oxidative damage. So for cooking, I use coconut oil exclusively.

And polyunsaturated fats, which include common vegetable oils such as corn, soy, safflower, sunflower and canola, are absolutely the worst oil to cook with.

Why?

Three primary reasons:

1) Cooking your food in omega-6 vegetable oils produces a variety of very toxic chemicals, as well as forming trans-fats. Frying destroys the antioxidants in oil, actually oxidizing the oil, which causes even worse problems for your body than trans-fats.

2) Most vegetable oils are GM Genetically Modified;including more than 90 percent of soy, corn and canola oils.

3) Vegetable oils contribute to the overabundance of damaged omega-6 fats in your diet, throwing off youromega 6 to omega 3 ratios.  Nearly everyone in Western society consumes far too many omega-6 fats — about 100 times more than a century ago — and insufficient omega 3 fats, this improper balance contributes to numerous chronic degenerative diseases.

There is only one oil that is stable enough to withstand the heat of cooking, and that’s coconut oil. So, do yourself a favor and ditch all those “healthy oil wannabes,” and replace them with a large jar of fresh, organic, heart-supporting coconut oil.

 

Chromium

Chromium helps to control blood sugar levels. It may also aid in reducing physiological hunger symptoms and play a role in breaking down fat. Healthy weight management is supported by chromium consumption.

Key Functions

  • Chromium is involved in the production of energy from fats and carbohydrates.
  • Chromium is believed to work with the hormone insulin to control sugar levels in the body and aid in lowering cholesterol levels.

Food Sources

Brewer’s yeast, egg yolk, meat, cheese, whole grains, spinach, and bananas

  • The milling step during the processing of grains may remove as much as 83% of the chromium. All process foods are lacking in chromium.
  • This chromium is not replaced during the enrichment process.

Safety Evidence

People who exercise frequently, the elderly, people who tend to gain weight easily, and those who consume high amounts of processed foods may want to ensure adequate intake of chromium.

Glutin Free Brownies some call them Frownies

Healthiest Bean Brownies a.k.a Frownies!

I saw this recipe called Frownies and of course you know my association with Frownies so I thought I would share it with you.

Gluten and dairy free No junky white flour or processed white anything here!

Ingredients:
1 low sodium, PBA free (if possible) can of chick peas (garbanzo beans)
3 large eggs
100% Cacao Unsweetened Chocolate bar
4 or 5 tbsp raw (but liquid) unprocessed honey, or more to taste
½ tsp gluten free baking powder
½ tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
*1/2 ripe banana – optional
crushed walnuts

Directions:
Break up the chocolate bar into little pieces and melt in a double boiler. Rinse chickpeas well, and process in a blender with eggs, honey, and the rest of the dry ingredients sans walnuts. Once nicely blended, add in melted chocolate (and banana if using) and blend until smooth. Grease up a baking dish (or cupcake molds) really well. These will stick! Sprinkle with crushed walnuts and bake for 35 minutes or so at 350.

Frownies are done when a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Don’t over bake as they will turn out dry. Cool on rack or in the fridge to stop the cooking process.

Bag up or store in a sealed container…. or share with friends & family and ask them to guess the main ingredient. Watch their eyes get really big once they hear they’re eating beans, it’s pretty fun 🙂

The term “phytonutrient” is applied to those plant compounds that promote better health, although they have not been defined as absolutely essential to human health. Knowing how important it is to supply the essential nutrients what they need to do their job I find these nutrients defined as phytonutrients essential.

Corn Chowder-Vegan

Summer is on the way if you grow your own or can get of organic non GMO corn this is an amazingly simple and delicious corn chowder recipe. Ingredients

4 ears of corn or 4 cups of frozen corn thawed

1 onion diced

2 stalks of celery diced

2 tablespoons of corn flour

2 tablespoons of corn

4-6 cups of water

Put oil in to heated pan add one diced onion piece when it sizzles it is ready to add all of the onion. Sauté until the onion is tender and clear then add the corn and sauté a few minutes longer. Add the corn flour stir to coat all the vegetables, this is called a rue. When all the vegetables are coated add the water and cook for 15 minutes. Add the diced celery and salt and cook another 10minutes. Stir during cooking because the corn flour has a tendency to stick. This can be seasoned with black pepper or dill for variety.

Why think about Magnesium

Magnesium is essential for every biochemical process that takes place within the body. Magnesium is essential for calcium absorption. It is being recommend in a 1:1 ratio with calcium for maximum absorption.

Dr Oz recommends the below amounts as a minimum.

    • 9-13 years old: 240 milligrams
    • 14-18 years old (boys): 410 milligrams

  • Breastfeeding women: 320-360 milligrams
  • Adult males: 400 milligram

Stress uses up your magnesium and when you sweet you loose magnesium.  If you take too much magnesium you will get loose stools.  It is generally recommended you take it to bowel tolerance.  If the stools get loose take less.  By the way insomnia is a sign of low magnesium.

Whole Grain

The foods in this category are controversial. Many people have gluten allergies from a high refined grain consumption.
If you do eat grains they must be in the whole category to serve any benefit to your health. Refined grains are considered a risk factor food when we evaluate health and risk factor foods.

Whole Grain is eaten in small amounts in a health supportive diet. Always soak your grains before cooking this gives them more digestibility. Soaking releases an enzyme inhibitor and starts the sprouting process making the grain a plant. Grains are acid forming in the system plants are alkaline. Your blood must remain alkaline to preserve or restore health.THIS IS THE KEY TO BEING ABLE TO DIGEST WHOLE GRAINS for everyone. Those who over consume grain especially refined but even whole will develop digestive problems and blood sugar problems if the grains are not prepared properly. Soaking is key!

Gluten free whole grains include, rice, millet, quiona, amaranth and buckwheat. Whole grains with gluten are wheat, barley and oats.

Whole oatmeal has more protein than any popular cereal and is a good breakfast choice, but rice and millet make a great soft cereal as well. Men need no more than 4-5 1/2 cup servings of grain and women need no more than 2 1/2 cup servings of cooked grains. If you are a growing child, adolescent, teen or pregnant woman the need for protein goes up. Steel cut oats are better quality nutrition than rolled oats.

Health Supportive Omega 3 oils

Omega-3s are termed essential fatty acids (EFAs) because they are critical for good health. Since the body cannot make them on its own, omega-3s must be obtained from food.

Key Functions

  • Reduce hypertension. Studies of large groups of people have found that the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids may aid in lowering overall blood pressure level.
  • Improve heart health. Omega-3 fatty acids may play a part in keeping cholesterol levels low, stabilizing irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), and reducing blood pressure.
  • Protecting the heart. Researchers now believe that alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), one of the omega-3s, may be particularly beneficial in protecting against heart and blood vessel disease, and for lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Food Sources

Key omega-3 fatty acids include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexanoic acid (DHA), and alpha-lineolenic acid (ALA). EPAs and DHAs are found in oily cold-water fish such as tuna, salmon, and mackerel, as well as fresh seaweed. ALAs are found primarily in dark green leafy vegetables, flaxseed oils, hemp seeds, and certain vegetable oils.

Usage

There is no established recommended daily intake for omega-3s, but a healthy diet containing significant amounts of foods rich in this essential fatty acid is recommended. Most anti-aging experts recommend a minimum of 2000 IU daily for good brain health and skin care; if you are supplementing.

Omega fatty acids are very safe to consume. However, most experts recommend limiting fish consumption to two to three servings weekly because so many fish may be tainted with mercury and other contaminants. Fish oil capsules do not usually present this same risk.

My favorite omega 3 and 6 food is hemp seed confined with flax seed and cranberry juice in a blender for breakfast.

Safety Evidence

There are no known side effects associated with increasing your intake of omega-3 fatty acids through foods, although fish oil capsules do pose the risk of a “burp” factor – a harmless, sometimes unpleasant, fishy aftertaste that occurs with some brands of fish oil capsules.

Essential Nutrients During Pregnancy (And Where To Find Them)

Whilst pregnant women do not necessarily need to go on any ‘special’ diets during pregnancy, it is universally acknowledged that a healthy, well balanced diet is essential for the well being of both mother and baby. The Yale Medical Group suggests that good nutritional intake is important even before conception occurs with ‘per-conception nutrition’ laying the foundations for a smooth pregnancy, healthy fetus and happy mother.

A popular myth is that a pregnant woman is eating for two and therefore needs to double her food and calorie intake. This is untrue; in fact a pregnant woman should only need approximately 3000 extra calories a day. It is a simple case of quality over quantity, and her main aim in terms of dietary requirement should be to provide herself and her baby with essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals from various food groups in suitable amounts. After all, a growing fetus’s (baby’s) nourishment comes directly from its mother so if she is lacking in any nutrients then it is likely baby is too.

Some of the most important nutrients during pregnancy include:

Calcium. It is recommended that pregnant women should ingest 1300mg of calcium a day in order to facilitate the growth of healthy bones and teeth in their growing babies. A study by the World Health Organization also shows that calcium can help dilate blood vessels thereby increasing oxygen movement around the body and reducing the chances of pre-term delivery. Calcium can be found in sardines, almonds, quinoa, green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale or cabbage.

Iron. Anemia and fatigue are common problems within pregnant women. A iron rich diet can help prevent these as it replenishes red blood cells. Iron can be found in red meats, fish, poultry and whole grain and dark green vegetables.

Folic acid. This is an important nutrient to take before and during pregnancy as it is reduces the risk of neural tube defects in the baby (such as spina bifida) by 70%. Pregnant women should take up to 400mg of folic acid for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. This is usually taken in tablet/supplement form but can also be found in certain foods such as leafy vegetables, brown rice, nuts and orange juice.

Vitamin A. Otherwise known as beta carotene, Vitamin A helps produce good eyesight, healthy skin and strong bones. It can be found in a variety of fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, carrots, watermelon, apricots and pumpkin.

The B Vitamins. Vitamin B1, B5, B6 and B12 all provide different yet vital functions for mother and baby. They aid with the development of major organs, blood cells and the nervous system, and have even been known to help ease morning sickness. B Vitamins can be found in white meat, potatoes, pasta, eggs, flax, hemp or chia seeds, brown rice and quinoa.

Vitamin C. Perhaps the most well known vitamins, this helps boost the body’s immune system (which often becomes depleted during pregnancy) and protects mother and baby from infections. Vitamin C also helps the body absorb iron. It can be found in citrus fruits, Brussels sprouts, leafy greens and peppers.

Vitamin D. This vitamin aids the body’s absorption of calcium, therefore helping with the production of healthy bones and teeth. Vitamin D can be found in cod liver oil or, perhaps more pleasantly, in early morning sunshine, but a vitamin d3 supplement should always be taken; discuss amounts with your doctor or midwife. .

Carbohydrates. Carrying another person (albeit a small one) around all day is tiring and puts a strain on the muscles and heart. Carbohydrates are the best way of keeping energy levels up and providing ‘fuel’ for the body. They can be found in whole grains, rice and cereals.

Protein. This is essential for growth and cell/amino acid production. The US RDA recommend 38-45g of protein daily and this can be found in lean cuts of meat (digestion of fatty meats can often increase lethargy), fish, poultry and beans,seeds, nuts and grains.

Water. It might seem obvious but good, old fashioned H20 is invaluable during pregnancy. It keeps mother and baby well hydrated and helps transport valuable nutrients to the relevant parts of the body. It is recommended that pregnant women should drink up to 2 liters of water daily.

Occasionally, pregnant women may need to take supplements to increase their intake of any vital nutrients that they may be lacking in. But this should only be done under the instructions of a GP or midwife. Usually pregnant women can get what they need to thrive from entirely natural means – good, healthy food and plenty of rest and recuperation.

Kale Salad

1 bunch of fresh Kale
1/2 cup of pine nuts
1/4 cup dried cranberries chopped
1/4 cup blueberries
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 tsp himalayan salt
1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice

Wash Kale well and tear it into small pieces, add the pine nuts, and dried cranberries along with blueberries if you like. Toss well with the olive oil and add salt and lemon juice. This salad is best made in advance at least 2 hours but keeps up to 4 days in the refrigerator.

Butternut Squash Soup

1Medium Squash pealed and cubed (4 cups)
1 large sweet onion diced
blender
4 cups of water
1/4 tsp himalayan salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp fresh grated ginger
2 tblsp. coconut oil

Bring all ingredients to a boil except the coconut oil, ginger and cinnamon. Boil 5 to 7 minutes, move to a blender, add coconut oil and puree. You can add the ginger and cinnamon in each bowl to taste or add it to the pot just before serving.

Sun Damage and Skin Cancer

The sun has taken a lot of blame for our increased rates of skin cancer, but research shows that sun might not be the original culprit, and hiding from the sun by using chemical sun screens can not only increase your chances of skin cancer, but it can increase your chances of all sorts of health problems by interfering with vitamin D synthesis.
There is not adequate scientific data to support the belief that sunscreens prevent skin cancers. The rate of skin cancers has actually increased in recent years when the use of sun screens has increased as well.

Melanin was thought to be only the pigment responsible for tanning, however, it has other important roles: it absorbs UVA, UVB, and UVC rays in ultraviolet light and neutralized oxygen free radicals during the invasion of bacteria, fungi and viruses and from exposure to light. Summer Rice Salads


2 cups of Soaked long grain brown rice (soak over night)this removes the enzyme inhibiting factors that make grain hard to digest for some people. Discard the soaking water.

Long grain rice has less carbohydrate, more protein and is lighter for summer salads.

3 cups of filtered water

pinch of sea salt

You can boil or pressure cook rice. Pressure cooking makes it easier to digest. Bring the rice, water and salt to boil, reduce heat to a minimum and cover or put the lid on pressure cooker if you are using one. I like the pressure cooker because it cooks the grain more thoroughly. It is not faster the time to allow for cooking is the same; 40 minutes.

Remove the cooked rice from the pan immediately. This allows for cooling evenly, other wise the rice will stick together and be mushy. Using a wooden spoon scoop out the cooked rice into another bowl, don’t stir or breakup the rice just separate it gently so it can cool evenly without sticking together.

Salad #1
Toss into the rice:

1/3 cup of fresh lemon juice
1/3 cup of extra virgin olive oil
course ground salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup of sliced black olives
1/4 cup of chopped parsley or cilantro
1/4 cup of diced roasted red peppers
6-8 fresh basil leaves diced
any other fresh herbs you may enjoy!

Salad #2
1 medium zucchini slices into rounds and halved
1 large sweet onion sliced into half moons (cut in half and then slice from top to bottom)
2-3 cloves of garlic
1-2 large tomatoes
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
bring a heavy pan to heat add coconut oil and all other ingredient then sautee about 3-5 minutes. Place the vegetables on top of the rice and serve.

Salad #3

1/4 cup a cilantro diced
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 cup of cooked beans (pinto, black, or aduzki)
toss all the ingredient together with the rice and enjoy.
