Nutrients from food are absorbed by the body as it passes through the digestive system:

Nutrients can work alone but are better in the whole form or food with Macronutrients, (carbohydrates, fats and protien) and micronutrients (vitamin and minerals), as nature provided them.
Macro nutrients produce energy and repair the body while micro nutrients activate enzymes, which are proteins that act as catalysts to speed up biological reactions that take place in your body. The body produces certian amounts of vitamin D and K but all other nutrients come from your food or supplimentation.
